Senior Research Fellow denotes a more senior individual (more than 10 years of postdoctoral experience) and Senior Clinical Fellow a more senior individual (PGY-9 equivalent or higher) in this Intramural Professional Designation.

Adjunct Investigator refers to an individual working full or part-time in an intramural setting, whose primary career appointment is elsewhere (e.g., extramural NIH program, medical school or university faculty on sabbatical), often but not always on non-NIH support, and usually more than 8-years postdoctoral (e.g., includes Fogarty Scholars).

A foreign scientist approved by the DIR for designation as Senior Investigator, Investigator, or Staff Scientist/Staff Clinician will be supported for J-1 visa waiver/permanent resident status (green card) if this is necessary.
