  1. Minutes of the June 18 Meeting: The draft minutes were approved without modifications.
  2. Subcommittees Reports: Ms. Hedetniemi and Dr. Poodry reported on the development of the draft questions for the focus groups and on the commencement of the meetings with the different focus groups. Some of the focus groups scheduled by the end of July were: MARC students, WINS students, NIEHS summer students, SIP (Summer Internship Program) and SRFP (Summer Research Fellowship Program) students, Howard Hughes "cloister" scholars, returning non-local summer students (high school and college), first-time summer students (local and non-local), UGSP scholars.

Dr. Garcia-Perez reported on the development of the form for information collection on "Current Intramural Trainees Data and Recruitment Efforts." It was decided that the information should also be requested about the 1999 summer students since some of this information is not available from the Office of Education database.
  3. NIH Academy Slogan: Dr. Garcia-Perez mentioned that it had been brought to her and Dr. Gottesman's attention that the term "academy" may have elitist or racist overtones. It had been suggested that a slogan that accompanied the NIH Academy on all its documents would help to clarify and ameliorate any unfortunate interpretation of the term academy. Possible slogans will be discussed at a future meeting.
  4. General Structure of the NIH Academy: A discussion document was presented covering such topics as the identity of the NIH Academy (separate entity vs. umbrella concept), the types of candidates, the application and placement processes, the residential components, recruitment incentives for the candidates, recruitment incentives for the preceptors and Scientific Directors. The majority of the members present felt that the NIH Academy should be an entity in itself, but with interaction and connectivity with other successful NIH training programs. The Working Group will continue to refine and delineate the goals of the Academy, to identify the best structure to achieve the goals and the best means to recruit the most suitable candidates.
