Summary of Physical Activity Workgroup

January 20-21, 2000, Bethesda, MD


1. Mission Statement
Will have a subgroup to develop this and work on the internet to come to agreement.

Action:  Need to establish a working group.
 

2. Measures
Exercise Assessment, Stages of Change: Addressed issues related to definition of exercise as being planned physical activity performed to increase physical activity, timing of exercise, intensity of exercise, way in which the measure will be used, wording of measures, triangulation of activity.

Action:  It was suggested that the word accumulate be removed, minutes increase to 30, and number of days be decreased to 4. Claudio Nigg will revise the measure and send it to Barbara Resnick and Abby King for review and then out to the full group.Will consider leading symposium on the appropriate definitions of exercise and activity, although there was consensus that this be based on data.
 

3. Demographic Information
Attempt to get consensus on the demographic information collected.

Action: Will share common NIH data form.
 

4. Other Measures
Discussed use of Seven Day Activity measure.

Action: Abby King (coordinated with Terri Bazarre) Will establish conference call to do training on the interviewing techniques for the Seven Day Activity measure.

Discussed record keeping alternatives for exercise.

Action: Will attempt to get copies of different types of record keeping onto the Web. Also addressed issues common between nutrition and exercise in terms of recording. Will work towards a repository of information about instruments and record keeping.

Yale measure addressed.

Action:  Clarified use of first two pages rather than full measure.

Self-efficacy measures.

Action:  Terry Bazarre to send out his single question related to self-efficacy and exercise/activity

Champs measure addressed.

Action: If interested in this measure must request this through Abby King/Anita Stewart who developed the measure.

 

5. Costs
Discussed ways in which to consider the cost/cost effectiveness of the interventions.

Also considered not only the cost of the interventions but how to implement and cost of implementation.

Action:  Will discuss this further with the group.
