Summary of Nutrition Workgroup

December 06-07, 2001, Dallas, TX

Participants met to discuss a wide variety of interests and concerns on the BCC Diet Validation Substudy, identify additional research issues or questions, and identify potential research paper topics, areas of cross-collaboration, and future meeting session presentations. Investigator who initiated discussion for each topic is identified in parenthesis.

1. Preliminary Diet Validation Data Update (Rossi/Greene/Peterson)

Where are we as a group?  Sites identified that they are in different stages of their data collection process.

What data should be included in the common data sets for group focused- analyses?  Still in discussion.

Technical issues involving dietary data collection and coding at different sites with different instruments still in process of resolution.  Sue and Melina have been forwarding various coding documents to the sites involved to clarify these issues.   They report that progress has been made.   They will continue to work with the individual sites to resolve the coding issues.

2. Carotenoid Lab Analysis Update (Resnicow)

Concerns over developing lag time in carotenoid analysis from U of I, Chicago labs.

Chicago lab has been short-staffed.

NCI has scheduled a conference call with involved sites to discuss and problem solve.  New time frame for receipt of lab results has been requested from Chicago.

3. Kristal Fat/Fiber Questionnaire (Toobert)

Several sites have included the Kristal Questionnaire in their data collection.  This is a prime time to include this data.

A subgroup of the Diet Validation Substudy will include data from this tool within the validation study analysis.

Development of analysis/paper concept will continue to be explored.

4. Portion Size Concept Questions to Explore Further (Toobert)

Influence on obesity in the U.S.

Can portion size be extracted from the FFQ or the 24-hour recall?

Is portion size a better predictor of health outcomes than fat intake, than fruit and vegetable intake?

Are their interesting psychosocial predictors of portion size?

Topic tabled for further discussion at later date.

5. Reliability Analysis (Resnicow)

Reliability Studies on NCI fruit/vegetable and fat screener

Could a few sites within the diet validation substudy have a subsample of their subjects complete the instruments twice over a one or two week period?

6. Social Support Paper (Toobert/ Peterson/in collaboration with Lisa Klesges)

How can the Nutrition Working Group facilitate this paper?

To do:      Identify sites collecting social support data

Identify which support measures used by each site.

How can the group measure social support constructs if the sites don’t have identical measures?

Are there common types of social support that predict adherence to different target behaviors (i.e., diet, exercise, smoking) among different samples and settings?

Option:    Consult with an expert in Social Support Research (i.e., Manuel Barrera, Sheldon Cohen).

Deborah Toobert has agreed to champion this concept for further development.

7. Dietary Supplement Data (Costello)

How can the Office of Dietary Supplements (OD) help the Nutrition Working group obtain dietary supplement data from the sites?

Identify if time/funds are needed to support the data collection/analysis.

Data collection forms as identified by site:

URI – Form A (general intake)
Oregon Health Sciences – separate questionnaire (contains information from Form A & B)
ORI – Form B (qualitative information and dose)
Illinois – Form B and supplement labels
Emory – PLEASE SEND COPY OF YOUR QUESTIONNARE TO BECKY COSTELLO at NIH
Kansas – Youth Dietary Supplement Use Survey

8. The group decided that the growing cross-collaborations and technical problem solving required to support activities within the Nutrition Workgroup would be helped by frequent conference calls.

NCI will coordinate regular conference calls (scheduled monthly) to facilitate group activities.

9. Concept development for future professional meeting session or symposium

After extensive discussions with the Physical Activity Workgroup, the Nutrition Workgroup is planning to submit a series of abstracts in partnership with several sites in Physical Activity to the July ISBNPA meeting in Seattle Washington.   Sites will coordinate their submission with Linda Nebeling at NCI so that they will be considered for review as a packaged topic area under the umbrella of the Behavior Change Consortium.
