This study applies the Transtheoretical Model of Health
Behavior Change (TTM) to the elderly and studies the effects of targeting both physical
activity and nutritional behavior singly and in combination. The investigators plan to
recruit 250 community-based older people for each of four treatment groups (i.e.,
interventions directed toward physical activity; nutrition; physical activity and
nutrition combined; and a control). While the TTM has been successful in younger
populations, this is one of the first examinations of multiple behavioral change in an
elderly population. Modifying existing educational materials, expert feedback reports, and
coaching phone calls for an elderly population, this project is significant because of its
potential for preventing or postponing chronic health problems associated with old age.
