Exercise Advice by Human or Computer: Testing 2 Theories
  • Principal Investigator: Abby King, Ph.D.
  • Institution: Stanford University School of Medicine
  • Grant Number: 1 R01 AG16587-01
  • Program Official: Dr. Sidney Stahl

This study will compare two alternative theoretical perspectives by conducting a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of a telephone-administered counseling program delivered by a person (social influence enhancement) or computer (cognitive evaluation enhancement) on both short and long-term adherence to recommended physical activity exercises. Two-hundred and twenty-five healthy, sedentary women and men ages 55 years and older living in California will be recruited. This study will contribute substantially to our understanding of the sustainability of exercise programs over time, and the relative cost of two different intervention approaches.
