Enhancing
Support for Women at Risk for Heart Disease
Diabetes in women appears to be associated with more elevated risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) than in men. This study will test different methods to sustain for an extended period of time comprehensive lifestyle change achieved initially through a lifestyle management program already in use by the investigators. Effective systems for providing social support which is thought to be important for maintaining behavior change for an extended period have not been developed. This project will make a significant contribution by testing different methods for providing social support and their effect on long-term compliance. The research team will build on extensive experience in management of Type 2 diabetes and lifestyle interventions with women, and have made commitments to recruit 250 individuals and oversample minority populations during recruitment in order to increase their participation in the study significantly.
