Firefighters represent active Americans with health risks that could be improved with a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Two intervention models to promote exercise and a healthy diet will be evaluated with the cooperation of Portland, Oregon firefighters. One intervention will capitalize on group meetings and shared learning experiences to promote increased exercise and a healthy diet. The other intervention will target the individual and reinforce personal efforts to exercise more and eat a healthy diet. This research will measure changes in physical fitness and allow a head to head comparison of these two approaches to promote increased exercise and better nutrition in daily life.
